Prologue
People think the hard part is the dying. It isn't. The dying mostly takes care of itself once everything else is in order, and order was always the part I was good at.
Sarah Millbrook kept herself in order. I had watched her long enough to know it before I ever stood close to her — the way she backed into the same corner of the lot each night, nose out, ready to leave; the way she carried her keys already in her hand; the small daily arrangements of a person who believed she had a Wednesday coming. I respected her for it before I knew anything else about her.
I am not cruel about these things. I want that understood, though there is no one to understand it and never has been. I don't hurry them and I don't frighten them. Fear makes a body fight, and a body that fights makes a mess, and a mess is the one thing I cannot sit inside of. So I am gentle. I am the most gentle thing that will ever happen to them. By the time it matters they are already somewhere soft and far down, and I am simply there, keeping watch, the way I once kept watch over men in a tent in the worst heat God ever made, men who were louder than Sarah and no more likely to see morning.
They had a word for what I did over there. The word was excellent, right up until it wasn't, until a colonel with sweat on his lip looked at me across a desk and couldn't find a single thing to charge me with and sent me home anyway. He knew. I'll give him that. He was the only one who ever looked at me and saw the whole of it, and even he couldn't make it into a sentence anyone would sign. I have thought about that colonel more than I have thought about any of them. He is the closest thing I have to being known.
Here is what the quiet does. It comes up in me like water in a low field, slow, and it does not stop, and there is no draining it except the one way. People talk about killing like it's a hunger or a heat. For me it is the opposite. It is the only time the field goes dry. The only time I am level. I sat in the last of it with Sarah Millbrook and I felt myself come down to even, degree by degree, the way a fever breaks, and if you have never run that hot you cannot know what it is to finally be cool.
When it was finished I did for her what I would want done. I washed her face. I closed her eyes and weighted them the proper way so they would stay. I straightened her legs and crossed her hands low and turned her head a few degrees, because a head that lolls is the thing that tells you no one stayed, and someone stayed. I combed her hair until it lay right, there in the dark behind the shuttered strip of stores where I had brought her, out of the wind. They will find her cared for. That is not a message. I am not writing to anyone. It is only that I cannot leave a person in disarray any more than I can leave a room in one, and to me these are the same thing, the room and the person, both just things that want putting straight.
I went out the way I came, which is to say nobody saw anything worth keeping. I am the kind of thing your eyes slide off of. They will stand over her in that lot and they will narrow their eyes and they will start to build the one who did this. He'll be tall. He'll be strong, to have managed it without a struggle. He'll travel for his work, all those states, all that distance. They will give it a name eventually, something about how quiet it was, and they will spend a year describing a man who has never set foot in this state. I will be a long way north by then, in a small dark square that is only mine, watching the fields go by, level at last.
There is one thing they'll find if they are patient, and good, and willing to be wrong about everything else first. A thing done to her body with too much skill. A trained hand leaves its mark the way trained anything does, and I have stopped pretending I can keep it from showing, because the hands are honest even when the rest of me is not. It will be small. It will sit in a file for a long time meaning nothing.
It will mean me. Eventually it will mean me. But not for a while, and not to the ones who are already so sure they know what he looks like.
Chapter One
The coffee in the break room had been sitting on the burner since six and it was now seven forty-three and Rob Tucker drank it anyway because the alternative was conversation and he wasn't up for that today.
He stood at the window with the cup and watched the parking lot fill up. Phoenix PD's morning shift arriving in ones and twos, people moving through the heat that was already building even in early October because this city didn't really believe in fall. It just got slightly less brutal for a few weeks and called it a season.
Seven months. He turned the number over in his mind the way he'd been doing every morning for the last several weeks. Seven months and he was done. His paperwork was in. His pension was locked. There was a Tuesday in May sitting out there in the future like a finish line he was crawling toward with his eyes down, not looking left or right, just keeping his head low and his mouth shut.
The hand. He flexed it once under the rim of his coffee cup where nobody could see. The left one. The fingers responded the way they always did now, like a man trying to remember a name that used to come without thinking, the word right there at the edge of him and then not. Close enough to pass inspection, not close enough for anything that actually mattered.
Eighteen months since the arrest, seventeen since the surgery, and the doctor had said remarkable progress and Rob had nodded and thanked him and driven home and sat in his car in the parking garage for forty minutes because going inside felt worse than sitting in the dark. Remarkable progress. Sure.
Two years ago she'd sat across their kitchen table and told him. Not crying. That surprised him more than anything, even now. There was someone else. Had been for almost a year. He'd spent thirty years reading people for a living, and he hadn't seen it coming at all.
His desk phone rang at eight-twelve. He almost didn't answer. But Carver was out, his kid in surgery since last night for a broken arm, freshman high school baseball, sliding into home base. The phone rang again and then again, and he crossed the room and picked it up because thirty years of conditioning doesn't quit just because you've filed retirement paperwork.
"Tucker."
The voice on the other end was young. Patrol, by the sound of it. Calling from a scene. He listened, wrote down the address, and looked at it for a long moment after he hung up. A street in a part of the city that didn't have a good reason to exist, the kind of block that appears on maps but not in conversations, where the buildings were tired and the businesses changed names without changing character.
He picked up his jacket with his right hand. Outside, the heat was already serious. Phoenix in early October was a city engaged in a fiction it could not quite maintain, the calendar insisting on autumn while the concrete and the caliche and the skin of the desert held the summer like an argument holds a grudge. Reluctant and total. He walked to his car in the light that was already white at seven in the morning and felt the city press in from every angle and drove toward whatever the day was going to ask of him.
